Know the difference

Browser port or web-native game?

They can open in the same browser tab while getting there in very different ways. The distinction helps you understand loading, files, controls and the maintainer’s role.

A port adapts an existing game

A browser port moves a game or its engine onto a web platform. OpenTTD’s linked build documents Emscripten compilation. Freeciv-web connects a browser client to Freeciv server technology. Their behavior depends on those specific adaptations.

A web-native game starts on the web

HexGL is described by its author as an HTML5 racing game. Hextris uses HTML5 Canvas, and 2048 is a JavaScript browser game. They are useful games to discover alongside ports, but labelling them console ports would be wrong.

Open-source code and game data differ

An engine’s licence does not automatically cover every texture, sound or original game archive. Follow the linked project’s data instructions. This site provides launch and source links; it does not distribute commercial ROMs or promise a licence for somebody else’s assets.
