RACING / WEB-NATIVE

HexGL.

A futuristic HTML5 racer by Thibaut Despoulain. HexGL was built for the web; it belongs in the web-native collection rather than being described as a console-game port.

    Read the keyboard screen

The original control-help image below shows the layout used by this build.

  2. 02

    Choose a quality setting

Start at a lower setting if your browser struggles with the scene.

  3. 03

    Learn a clean line

Use an opening run to learn turns and braking rather than chasing a time immediately.

KEEP THIS HANDY

Controls at a glance.

Arrow keys
Steer and accelerate, as shown in the original keyboard help.
A / D
Airbrakes in the original keyboard help.

Read the selected mode’s help before starting.

Look through the corner

As a starting technique, steer toward the next stretch of track and make small corrections. Repeated large corrections make it harder to learn the line. This is driving advice, not a claim that we completed a timed lap.

Make graphics a separate decision

The game uses WebGL and offers a quality selector. If the menus work but the race is blank or slow, try a lower setting and check browser graphics support. A faster download cannot resolve a graphics-context failure.

An early web racer with public source

Thibaut Despoulain’s project includes game and rendering code under MIT unless a file says otherwise. The README says development is on hiatus, so contemporary device compatibility should be checked in the actual game.

A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS

Before the next click.

Was HexGL ported from a console?

Its author describes it as an HTML5 racing game. We classify it as web-native.

Why do I see the menu but no race?

The race needs a working WebGL scene. Try lower quality and another current browser, keeping the exact error if it still fails.

Has a complete lap been tested here?

An opening race screen was captured after the Start and help screens. A complete lap and performance benchmark were not verified.
