KEEP IN MIND
- Locate the diagonal keys in your chosen scheme.
- Count actions and inspect blocking terrain.
- Check whether a destination is occupied by a zombie.
- Read item effects and costs before buying.
- Use the current 2024 project manual.
Choose an eight-direction input scheme
The manual documents arrows, numpad and vi keys. Arrows cover cardinal movement, while numpad and vi mappings also cover diagonals. Pick a scheme you can use reliably and locate its diagonal keys before an urgent escape. A laptop without a numpad still has the documented vi option. The source establishes those mappings; this note does not claim a tested hardware-keyboard setup on every device.
Count the actions in the route
A diagonal move can reach a diagonally adjacent cell in one action, while two cardinal moves take two. Compare candidate routes in actions, then check the cells for water, houses or barricades. The shortest-looking line is irrelevant if the destination is blocked. Plan one clear route and observe the first step before holding or repeating a movement command.
Recognize when movement becomes an attack
Trying to enter a zombie’s cell attacks it rather than moving there. The manual calls bump combat slow, inefficient and risky. Read the occupancy of the next cell when planning an escape, especially if several zombies are close. An intended movement command can therefore leave you fighting in place while the surrounding situation changes.
Inspect the shop before buying
Kills provide money, and shops sell items. The manual says you can store any number of items and that their effects hurt zombies rather than the player or other items. Read the current item description and price before buying. Compare its available effect with the immediate problem instead of assuming a larger inventory automatically produces a better plan.
Use the current project’s instructions
The README explains that the 2024 challenge rewrote an older same-named game. Use the linked current manual and tutorial rather than a guide to the legacy branch. Waiting is available through Space, numpad 5 or period; it is still an action, so use it deliberately. This site’s Saved button keeps the profile link and does not preserve the current survival run.
Read the originals.
